Design work  Pentagram.

Product design  IDEO.

Who’s your favorite designer?

While I was attending college, I did a research poster on Michael Bierut over at Pentagram and fell in love with his work. He doesn’t know it, but he’s my long-distance mentor.

Any favorite design books?

I have way too many, but I have some good recommendations.

What’s your favorite design era?

Swiss Design had the sauce.

I’d have to say the 1955 Beethoven poster by Josef Müller-Brockmann.

I think the FedEx logo, done by Lindon Leader, is minimally clever.

Who’s a designer that's underrated?

Otto Storch was incredibly creative with magazine spreads during his time. He had a way of arranging type and imagery effectively.

What’s your definition of branding?

I have to stick with Marty Neumeier’s definition. Branding isn’t a tangible thing — it’s a gut feeling about a service, product, or organization.

What’s your favorite product design story?

The Hermann Miller Aeron chair is an incredible story of product design using human observation. I own this chair, and it doesn’t disappoint.

Do you have any other creative outlooks?

When I’m not doing freelance design work, I write piano music as well as do professional photography.

What are your thoughts on Comic Sans?

I used to be on the hate train like every other designer, but it’s actually great for young readers and it’s accessible to individuals with dyslexia.
